December 1989: Dancing on the Edge of the Decade

December 1989 was a busy month for deadheads. Some lucky deadheads saw Jerry Garcia ten times. They started with the Jerry Garcia Band at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco, the Dead at the Forum in LA, the Dead's Earthquake Benefit in Oakland, California, and of course later that month the annual ritualistic Grateful Dead three-night New Years Run in Oakland. Brian Bothun … [Read more...] about December 1989: Dancing on the Edge of the Decade

Fall 1989: The Dark Star Tour

Deadhead Bob Ulius embarks on his first Dead Fall Tour, and invites us along for the trip. Rumours were flying about a curious set of local Hampton, VA shows featuring a band called "Formerly The Warlocks" tacked on to the beginning of the tour with tickets only available locally. Bob managed to snag tickets for those shows, and witnesses the first "Dark Star" since the July … [Read more...] about Fall 1989: The Dark Star Tour

Summer Tour 1989 – Foxburo, MA to East Troy, WI Report

The Grateful Dead's 1987 hit album "Touch of Grey" turned out to be a commercial success and a touring bonanza. The 1989 Summer Tour may be remembered as the last with … [Read more...] about Summer Tour 1989 – Foxburo, MA to East Troy, WI Report

The Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA August 17-19, 1989 Report

Two weeks after Cal Expo, deadheads flocked to Berkeley for the annual Greek Theater shows, which were benefits for the Dead's charity project, the Rex Foundation. Many deadheads were shut out of the Greeks and hundreds were outside looking for those few miracle tickets. Speakers were set up nearby for the overflow crowd to hear the local radio broadcast of the … [Read more...] about The Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA August 17-19, 1989 Report

Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA June 1989 Report

The house that Bill Graham built, Shoreline Amphitheater located in Mountain View, CA is well on its way to becoming the home of the Grateful Dead in the 1990's. For the third year in a row the 22,000 capacity venue welcomed the Dead for their Summer Solstice sold-out three day run on June 18, 19 and 21, 1989. On June 21 the Dead invited the whole country to celebrate Summer … [Read more...] about Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA June 1989 Report

Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, Irvine, CA 1989 Report

The Grateful Dead have played at this 16,000 capacity amphitheater in Southern California fifteen times since 1983. This sold out three-night run in 1989 is their last appearance due to Orange County officials shaking their heads and pointing their fingers. Irvine was also quite the traffic nightmare, preventing heads from getting inside in time for the first set open. Musical … [Read more...] about Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, Irvine, CA 1989 Report
