Welcome to Dreams We Dreamed where we are re-releasing our TV show Dead Head TV. Back in 1988, Kathy Watkins and I dreamed of a TV show for deadheads, being deadheads and video professionals ourselves. What would that look like? It would be a fast-paced magazine-format program that would be entertaining and informative. It would celebrate and speak to the sense of community that had developed at Grateful Dead concerts over the years. It would seek to explore the deadhead phenomenon intelligently, rather than as local news superficially features tie-die and patchouli oil.

To be clear, Dead Head TV is not about bootleg concert footage of the band. It’s about the deadheads themselves, and the fascinating scene they create as they followed the band on tour around the country. Dead Head TV and Dreams We Dreamed are in no way affiliated with the Grateful Dead or Rhino Entertainment.

Like many deadheads, we traveled great distances to see the Dead. One focus of our show was a “travelogue” that follows the Dead and the deadheads around the country, recreating the sights and sounds of the tour scene for deadheads right in their living room. We called this the Tour Report.

The original DTV was a half hour, monthly show, with 3 to 5 different segments. Besides the Tour Report, regular segments were Venue Reports, Deadhead Profiles, Show Reviews, Interviews with key members of the Grateful Dead family as well as other musicians and artists who are part of the history and ongoing evolution of the San Francisco music scene, educational and informative Features, and The Dead News. For this DTV re-release, we have collected the segments individually for those who have a particular interest in one subject rather than the entire program.

Along the way, more and more deadhead friends, some video professionals, musicians, or photographers, some just wanting to contribute, joined in, shooting on tour, running camera during interviews, sharing their musical performances, and helping in every way possible. I’ve acknowledged their contributions with credits at the end of each segment.

Check back often, we have lots more fun segments to come!
