The Grateful Dead’s 1989 New Year’s Eve ritual run was once again held at the Oakland, CA. Coliseum. As Midnight approached, the anticipation mounted for the transition into 1990, and for the Dead’s performance. For what has become a tradition, Bill Graham made his way across the hall, dressed as Father Time, throwing roses to the crowd down below. At the witching hour, balloons dropped, and the Dead leapt into Bill’s favorite song, Sugar Magnolia. Local news personalities comment on the event.
